The Young Engineers Corp Training has had four Cohorts since its inception in 2019. The training is important for young Engineers as it seeks to develop their capacities on core professional skills required in the workplace and expands their practical skills with on-the-job working experience.

YEC 1 & YEC 2

Both the YEC 1 and 2 training ran for about 10 weeks with around 20 Engineering students. The training was developed into various segments which are as follows:

• 1 weeks Basic Computer Skills and Project Management training

• 2 weeks soft skills training with an emphasis on Confidence and Assertiveness; Time Management; Thinking Skills – Lateral and Critical; Emotional Intelligence and Empathy; Team Building; Leadership Skills; Business Ethics and Etiquette; Research Skills; Presentation Skills; Conflict Resolution; Customer Service

• 6 weeks internship with employers utilizing manuals specifically developed for the 6-week internship, with employer specified objectives, and deliverables

• 1-week CV writing, interview preparation, and project closure

 

At the end of the internship, a number of the graduates were offered follow-up placements with some of the employers. The general feedback from the employers was that there was a marked difference in the graduates who had been through the program. Additionally, the confidence levels of the graduates increased significantly allowing them to think outside the box, about their work.

YEC3

The YEC 3 started on the 13th of January 2020 with 53 participants, but this number quickly subsided after an impromptu test was given to participants. The test was based on speech, logic and reasoning, numerical aptitude, and comprehension passages. Out of the 53, participants, 25 were selected comprising of 9 females and 16 males. The selected participants had to undergo 3 weeks of training which was followed by a 6 weeks internship at different Engineering companies. The 3 weeks training was divided as follows:

Week 1 - communication skills, confidence and assertiveness, leadership skills, team building, touch typing, Microsoft Word & PowerPoint, and Project Management.

Week 2 - written communication, research skills, presentation skills, conflict resolution, lateral thinking, emotional intelligence Microsoft excel and customer service.

Week 3 – Business ethics & etiquette, Microsoft word & excel, time management, and CV writing.

YEC 4

  • The YEC 4 faced difficulties due to the Covid 19 pandemic but still started on course. The assessment was done on Wednesday 10th March 2021 with 56 participants at the newly established Innovation Hub. The assessment was focused on four key areas which are comprehension, verbal aptitude, numerical sequence, impromptu speech, and IQ test.  Out of the 56 candidates, only 26 were selected and notified to start the training on Monday 15th of March 2021. At the end of the training, participants were attached to various companies for internships.
