The Sierra Leone Institution of Engineers is a professional organisation of professional, graduate and student engineers. The organisation was founded in 1970 after an act of Parliament formed the Professional Engineers Registration Council.
History
The Sierra Leone Institution of Engineers (SLIE) and the Professional Engineers Registration Council (PERC) emerged out of the Sierra Leone Association of Technologists which was formed in the early sixties and included professionals such as Engineers, Architects, Surveyors, Town Planners, Radiographers and Laboratory Technicians
As the membership of the Association grew in size, the needs of engineers became more specific especially regarding the practice of the profession. This coupled with the fact that the majority of the members were Engineers, led to the formation of the Sierra Leone Institution of Engineers in 1970, with the following aims and objectives:
- Securing the advancement and facilitating the acquisition of species of knowledge which constitutes the application of Engineering in all its branches, with particular applications in Sierra Leone, for the betterment of man by the use of any or all of the following means:
- Promoting and maintaining the unity, public usefulness, honour and interests of its members and making known the objectives of the Institution.
- Fostering linkage between the engineering institution and industry
- Promoting sound engineering practice
- Promoting engineering education in schools
- Promoting gender participation in engineering.
- Holding periodic meetings for members of the Institution
- Assisting by all means available and initiating action connected with the widespread dissemination of engineering knowledge in Sierra Leone.
- Arranging the delivery of public lectures, talks, convocation of seminars for discussion of subjects related to the objects of the Institution, and making recommendations.
The Institution as it exists today, was established by an Act of Parliament, “The Professional Engineers Act” piloted by the then Minister of Works and was passed into Law on 13th March 1990. At that time, there were 104 registered members of various disciplines. The Institution has now grown to 1200 registered members and 150 student members. An increase of membership of over 1000%. The Act makes provision for the establishment of the Professional Engineers Registration Council (PERC) that is made up of nine (130) members.
Mission
Its aims and objectives were to promote the technical and professional development of its members and enhance their performance in their expected roles in the community.
